Writing Your Life: A Full-Day Personal Writing & Memoir Workshop
In person, Friday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the NH Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College. COST: $59
Everyone has stories worth telling. This full-day, hands-on workshop invites writers of all experience levels to explore the memories, places, and people that have shaped their lives. Through short craft talks, guided writing exercises, and supportive group conversation, participants will learn practical techniques used in memoir and personal essay. The workshop focuses on two powerful storytelling tools: using sensory detail to bring memories to life and shaping scenes that move between lived moments and personal reflection.
Participants will generate new material, experimenting with craft techniques, and revising a short scene drawn from their own experiences. Opportunities for voluntary sharing and discussion will help writers see what resonates with readers and discover new possibilities in their work. No previous writing experience is required.
Instructor Hope Jordan is a writer, teacher, and New Hampshire's first official poetry slam master. She teaches creative nonfiction at Plymouth State University. How to Pitch Stories Journalists Actually Want
Online, Wednesday, May 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. FREE
Journalists receive dozens, if not hundreds, of story ideas every week. What makes one pitch rise above the rest?
New Hampshire journalists David Pierce, news editor at the Union Leader; Carol Robidoux, founder and publisher of Manchester Ink Link and Nashua Ink Link; and Tony Schinella, senior local field editor for Patch in NH and RI, will pull back the curtain on how they evaluate story ideas and decide what’s worth pursuing. They’ll share what makes a pitch compelling, the common mistakes that send pitches straight to the delete folder, and why understanding the story behind your topic is critical. Get feedback on your story pitch or press release. Participants will gain practical insights into how to frame a pitch and find the right angle, so it resonates with journalists and their audiences.
